Surface water is all the fresh and salt water on the surface of the earth. Surface water in our city includes ponds, puddles, lakes, streams, wetlands and Port Gardner Bay (Puget Sound).
Stormwater is water that flows into storm drains located in streets or in low areas in parking lots. This water includes rainwater, melted snow and ice, and water from gardening and lawn watering. Pollutants picked up by water flowing into storm drains is called non-point source pollution. More...

Most storm drains lead to a body of surface water. In Everett, there are fifteen separate bodies of water where stormwater flows before it drains to Puget Sound. These are called drainage basins or municipal watersheds. In the older part of Everett, the water from storm drains is directed to the sewer system and is treated at the wastewater treatment plant. This area is called the combined sewer area.
