Collected food, food-soiled paper and yard waste are ground up, mixed together and processed into garden-ready nutrient rich compost at Cedar Groves Composting facility in North Everett.
Compost is an organic soil amendment and natural fertilizer well known for building healthy soils for plants and gardens. Compost benefits gardens, plantings, and lawns by:
- Loosening clay and compacted soils for better drainage
- Increasing moisture retention in sandy, porous soils
- Controlling soil erosion
- Suppressing weeds
- Making nutrients more easily available to plants
Food scraps and food-soiled paper make up more than 30 percent of residential garbage, and 65% of waste generated from a typical restaurant. Composting organic waste removes reusable material from the landfill, supports local business, and represents an opportunity for residents and food service businesses to reduce garbage volume, save money and “Go Green.”
