The Broadway Bridge is more than 100 years old and in need of replacement. We will demolish and replace a 100-feet span by 100-feet wide bridge over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad main line. The bridge span is located on Broadway between Hewitt Avenue and California Street.
Current weight restrictions:
Effective June 19, 2014, the City Engineer has extended a weight-limit restriction to all lanes of Broadway between Hewitt Avenue and California Street. Vehicles weighing more than 11 tons must use alternate routes. The weight restrictions shall remain in effect across all lanes until the bridge is permanently closed for demolition.
Contract Awarded to Interwest Construction, Inc. October 2014
Begin Detour Route construction: December 2014
Begin Bridge Demolition: February 2015
Complete Construction: Early 2016
Why will it take so long?
No over-track work allowed while trains are running – 44 freight trains on average per day.
No over-track work allowed from October to December – BNSF major freight season restriction.
Total demolition and new construction of the bridge with new foundation and abutments (as opposed to swapping out a bridge span like the temporary Skagit River bridge.)
Different vertical alignment – for improved sight distance and railroad clearance.
