Construction • The Van Valey house was built in 1914 and is listed on the City of Everett Historic Register. • Original construction cost was $5,000. • The architectural style is Foursquare or Classic Box. • Wood for the house was cut on site. It is quarter-sawn paneling (irreplaceable today).
Special attributes • Bay windows were imported from France. • Leaded glass windows came from Belgium and include 236 panes of beveled glass. • Of the seven original stained glass panels, five remain. • Coffered ceilings are featured in the dining room and the history exhibit room. • The initial "V" for Van Valey can be found on the chimney exterior. • The bronze sculpture on the newell post was recently recast from the damaged original. • A copper beach tree and tulip tree located on the grounds are listed on the historic register.
Previous owners • Over the years, the structure has been a day care and elderly care facility, family residence 1950-1957, Andiron Restaurant 1957-1962, and headquarters of the local Red Cross 1962-1979. • Ed and Betty Morrow purchased the property in 1979. In 2002, they generously donated the house to the City of Everett. It is now managed by the Parks and Recreation Department.
